South Korean equities commenced trading on a positive note Wednesday, reflecting the robust gains seen overnight on Wall Street. However, persistent geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to cast a shadow of uncertainty, prompting caution among global investors.

Following an initial surge of 3.3 percent at market open, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) further extended its upward trajectory. By 9:15 a.m., the KOSPI had climbed an impressive 415.65 points, or 6.06 percent, reaching 7,272.48.

This strong performance follows Tuesday’s session, where the KOSPI managed to close 0.73 percent higher. This marked a notable rebound after experiencing a significant 8.95 percent plunge in the preceding session, primarily driven by a widespread sell-off in technology stocks.

Meanwhile, on the global stage, major U.S. indexes posted gains overnight. The Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.02 percent to 52,508.27, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite saw a more substantial climb of 0.9 percent, closing at 26,107.01.

Despite the day’s positive opening in Seoul, renewed geopolitical tensions between the United States and Iran in the Middle East are anticipated to persistently influence global investor sentiment, potentially capping further gains.

In a development that could impact regional stability, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he has withdrawn his proposal to levy a 20 percent “reimbursement” fee on cargo transiting the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Instead, he indicated a shift towards pursuing trade and investment agreements with Middle Eastern nations.

This reversal comes just a day after his previous statement where he declared the U.S. would act as the “guardian” of the strait, with a proposed 20 percent reimbursement on all cargo passing through the critical waterway.

Domestically in Seoul, the technology sector prominently led the market’s robust gains.

South Korea’s market bellwether, Samsung Electronics, saw its shares jump by 6.84 percent, while its key chipmaking competitor, SK hynix, surged an impressive 11.76 percent.

Beyond tech, other industry leaders also posted strong performances: top carmaker Hyundai Motor advanced 2.71 percent, defense firm Hanwha Aerospace climbed 5.5 percent, and steel giant POSCO Holdings gained 3.95 percent.

Conversely, not all shares shared in the day’s rally. Among the notable decliners, instant noodle manufacturer Samyang Foods recorded a 1.4 percent dip, and leading beverage firm Hitejinro saw a slight backtrack of 0.14 percent.
