South Korea Targets Top 5 Global Exporter Rank
Prime Minister Han Seong-sook speaks during a ceremony marking the 80th founding anniversary of the Korea International Trade Association at COEX in Seoul on Tuesday. ()

Prime Minister Han Seong-sook announced Tuesday a resolute government strategy to propel South Korea into the esteemed position of one of the world’s top five exporting nations. This ambitious goal underscores a concentrated policy drive towards enhancing the nation’s global trade footprint and economic prowess.

The significant commitment was made during the 80th founding anniversary celebration of the Korea International Trade Association. The pledge comes as South Korea experiences unprecedented export figures this year, largely bolstered by robust international demand for advanced memory chips, signaling a strong trajectory for the nation’s economic output.

“Our government is fully dedicating its policy resources to achieving the status of a top five global export powerhouse,” Prime Minister Han stated. She further emphasized, “We will actively pursue diversification of our export products and target markets, ensuring sustainable and resilient trade growth for the long term.”

Highlighting the nation’s rapid progress, Han pointed out that South Korea is firmly on track to achieve an impressive $1 trillion in total exports this year. To sustain this momentum, the government plans to fortify strategic partnerships with key global economies, specifically aiming to expand the international market presence of crucial sectors such as semiconductors, automobiles, and shipbuilding.

Indeed, South Korea’s export performance has been exceptional, with figures through June this year reaching a record-breaking $496.7 billion — an impressive 48.4 percent increase from the previous year. This remarkable growth is primarily attributed to the soaring worldwide demand for memory chips, significantly driven by the expanding requirements of artificial intelligence (AI) servers.
