Princess Anne, the Princess Royal, made a significant visit to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ cutting-edge shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, on Tuesday. This high-profile visit underscores the United Kingdom’s strategic efforts to bolster its vital shipbuilding and broader maritime industries, a key focus for both nations.

Accompanied by her husband, Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, and British Ambassador to South Korea Colin Crooks, Princess Anne was warmly received by top executives. HD Hyundai Chairman Chung Ki-sun, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Vice Chairman Lee Sang-kyun, and President Joo Won-ho welcomed the royal delegation. Discussions centered on showcasing the company’s advanced shipbuilding technologies and exploring avenues for enhanced bilateral cooperation across the vital shipbuilding and maritime sectors.

This engagement marked Princess Anne’s inaugural return to South Korea since her attendance at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, highlighting the growing ties between the two countries.

During her comprehensive tour, Princess Anne explored the shipyard’s state-of-the-art commercial and naval shipbuilding facilities, alongside its advanced engine factory. She also received detailed briefings on HD Hyundai’s robust partnerships with prominent British defense companies, including industry giants Rolls-Royce and Beaufort.

The long-standing collaboration between Rolls-Royce and HD Hyundai Heavy Industries dates back to 2012, specifically on Republic of Korea Navy frigate programs. Similarly, Beaufort has been a key supplier of vital submarine survival equipment to the esteemed shipbuilder since 2013, solidifying their strategic alliance.

HD Hyundai also took the opportunity to emphasize its deep-rooted historical connections with the British royal family, showcasing a legacy of Anglo-Korean collaboration.

The company’s founder, Chung Ju-yung, was notably appointed an honorary Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1977, a testament to his significant contributions in fostering trade relations between South Korea and the United Kingdom. He further strengthened these ties by meeting Princess Anne in London in 1983, lending crucial support to Seoul’s successful bid to host the Olympic Games.

This enduring relationship has seamlessly transcended generations. Former Prince Charles, now King Charles III, visited the Ulsan shipyard in 1992. Following in his footsteps, Prince Andrew also toured the facilities in 2008, then serving as the UK’s special representative for international trade and investment, further cementing the bond.

“The United Kingdom stands as a truly special partner, integral to HD Hyundai’s journey right from its inception,” stated Chairman Chung Ki-sun. He added, “Leveraging our world-class shipbuilding expertise, we are committed to supporting the continuous advancement and development of the UK’s dynamic shipbuilding and maritime industries.”
