LG Energy Solution has commenced mass production of high-performance lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells at its US joint venture plant with General Motors. This strategic move significantly accelerates LG Energy Solution’s expansion into the rapidly growing North American energy storage systems (ESS) market.

According to Ultium Cells, the pioneering joint venture, this significant commercial rollout on Tuesday follows roughly four months after the company unveiled plans to invest approximately $70 million. This investment was dedicated to converting a portion of its Tennessee plant’s production lines specifically for manufacturing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries crucial for energy storage systems (ESS).

These cutting-edge LFP battery cells are slated for supply to various customers via Vertech, LG Energy Solution’s North American subsidiary specializing in ESS system integration. Their versatile applications are anticipated to bolster critical infrastructure, encompassing grid stabilization projects, advanced renewable energy storage systems, and robust power solutions for the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence data centers.

Significantly, these US-manufactured LFP battery cells meet the stringent domestic manufacturing requirements stipulated by the Inflation Reduction Act. This compliance strategically circumvents potential regulatory hurdles and diversifies supply chains away from Chinese reliance, solidifying their competitive advantage.

Ultium Cells proudly announced the rapid completion of its production line conversion in under five months. This accomplishment underscores the company’s exceptional agility in adapting manufacturing capacity, swiftly transitioning from electric vehicle (EV) batteries to energy storage systems (ESS) to meet evolving market demands. Furthermore, the successful launch of mass production has facilitated the return of employees at the Tennessee plant who had faced temporary layoffs in January, signaling renewed growth and stability.

The activation of the Tennessee plant represents a pivotal milestone in LG Energy Solution’s ambitious strategy to establish five prominent ESS battery manufacturing hubs throughout North America, reinforcing regional production capabilities.

Currently, LG Energy Solution already manufactures ESS batteries at its established plant in Holland, Michigan, as well as through L-H Battery Company, its Michigan-based joint venture with Honda. With the anticipated operational start of its Lansing, Michigan facility later this year, LG Energy Solution is projected to elevate its annual North American ESS production capacity beyond an impressive 50 gigawatt-hours.

LG Energy Solution is actively broadening its North American ESS customer portfolio, securing crucial supply agreements with industry leaders. Notable partners include Tesla, Terra-Gen, Excelsior Energy Capital, EG4, and Hanwha Qcells. A significant development in May saw the company finalize a 6-gigawatt-hour ESS battery supply agreement with DTE Energy, destined for high-profile initiatives like Oracle’s advanced AI data centers.

Park In-jae, President and CEO of Ultium Cells, affirmed the achievement, stating, “By leveraging LG Energy Solution’s cutting-edge advanced battery technology and the unwavering dedication of our skilled Tennessee workforce, we have successfully established an ESS production system that exemplifies unparalleled speed, flexibility, safety, quality, and productivity.”
