South Korea’s financial markets faced significant disruption on Friday as the nation’s bourse operator activated a circuit breaker for the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI). This critical measure was implemented following a sharp decline in stock values, primarily driven by a widespread slump among leading technology heavyweights.
As a result of the circuit breaker, trading of KOSPI-listed shares was temporarily halted for a mandatory 20-minute period to help stabilize the market and mitigate further losses.
The Korea Exchange officially triggered the circuit breaker around 12:10 p.m., after the KOSPI had plummeted more than 8 percent from its closing level of the previous trading session. The benchmark index experienced intense selling pressure as investors engaged in substantial profit-taking, particularly offloading large-cap technology stocks, which significantly contributed to the broader market crash.
