SK Telecom Backs SK Hynix’s AI Push with $477 Million Investment
SK Telecom, a prominent South Korean mobile operator and a core affiliate of SK Group, has announced a substantial investment of 738.4 billion won (approximately $477 million USD). This capital will be directed into a US-based investment vehicle established by semiconductor powerhouse SK Hynix, marking SK Telecom as the latest SK Group entity to champion the chipmaker’s ambitious advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) technology.
In a regulatory filing released on Thursday, the mobile carrier confirmed the signing of an agreement to acquire 1,198 newly issued shares in SK Hynix NAND Product Solutions. This strategic deal will secure SK Telecom a 0.9 percent stake in the venture, reinforcing its commitment to the evolving AI and data center landscape.
The US-based investment entity, crucial for SK Hynix’s growth, was founded in January through a collaborative effort between SK Hynix and Solidigm. SK Hynix has already committed a significant $10 billion to this fund, underscoring its long-term vision for leadership in next-generation memory and AI solutions.
SK Telecom clarified that its investment will be executed through a capital call arrangement. Under this flexible mechanism, funds are injected as needed upon request, within a pre-agreed financial limit. The entire commitment period for this investment extends for four years from the date the agreement was signed, ensuring sustained support for the venture’s strategic goals.
This latest investment by SK Telecom highlights a unified strategy across the wider SK Group. Earlier in March, other major affiliates, including SK Inc. and SK Innovation, also committed significant capital to the same US-based entity, investing $250 million and $380 million, respectively. This collective approach demonstrates the group’s concerted effort in fostering technological synergy.
SK Telecom explicitly stated that the primary objective of this investment is to strengthen cooperation among SK affiliates, particularly within the rapidly expanding sectors of AI data centers and related advanced technology businesses. This synergistic approach aims to leverage collective strengths for future growth.
An official from SK Telecom commented on the strategic rationale: “SK Group possesses comprehensive capabilities across the entire AI data center value chain. We are confident that this joint investment among our affiliates will significantly enhance our collective strengths and unlock new, compelling business opportunities in the burgeoning AI-driven economy.”
