MSCI Maintains South Korea’s Emerging Market Status

editor 6월 23, 2026
MSCI Maintains South Korea's Emerging Market Status

South Korea is unwavering in its pursuit of inclusion in the **developed market** category of the prestigious **Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) index**. This commitment comes after the global index provider opted to maintain Asia’s fourth-largest economy within its **emerging market** classification.

Overnight, MSCI confirmed that **South Korea** would remain an **emerging market**, despite comprehensive efforts by Seoul to achieve an upgrade to **developed market status**. The key barrier cited by MSCI was the **limited convertibility of the Korean won** within the **offshore currency market**, a persistent concern for international investors.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance expressed confidence in its strategy. “By consistently implementing targeted **reforms in the foreign exchange and capital markets** according to our timeline, we anticipate successful inclusion among **advanced economies**,” the Ministry stated.

Furthermore, the finance ministry reiterated its dedication to continuous dialogue with major **overseas investors**. South Korea aims to actively integrate their feedback into its financial policies to address existing challenges effectively.

While MSCI acknowledged the reform measures announced by **Korean market authorities** to tackle these long-standing issues, the index provider noted that the underlying problems have not yet been fully resolved from an **investor** perspective. “Investors have communicated that the fundamental issues persist,” MSCI highlighted, signaling the need for more impactful solutions.

Ultimately, the **restricted convertibility of the Korean won** in the **offshore currency market** remains the most significant impediment to **South Korea’s reclassification** to a **developed market** within the influential **MSCI index**.
