Korean Biotech Firms Forge Strategic Partnerships with AstraZeneca Experts in San Diego for Global Expansion
SAN DIEGO – Leading Korean biotechnology firms are significantly enhancing their strategic partnerships with AstraZeneca, a global pharmaceutical giant. These collaborations aim to accelerate open innovation and foster cutting-edge technological cooperation, paving the way for successful entry into the competitive global healthcare market.
Initiated as ‘Project NOVA,’ the Korea Health Industry Development Institute (KHIDI) spearheaded crucial partnering sessions for 13 innovative Korean biotech companies with AstraZeneca on Monday. These targeted 1-on-1 meetings took place during the esteemed BIO International Convention in San Diego, a prime event for global biopharmaceutical networking.
Nikhil Muthal, AstraZeneca’s Executive Director of Search and Evaluation for Respiratory and Immunology, underscored the company’s commitment to collaboration at a press conference held at the Hilton San Diego Bayfront. “We have a very good track record of doing excellent partnerships with global companies,” Muthal stated, highlighting AstraZeneca’s history of successful alliances.
He added, “When we do partnerships, those are very meaningful, and we advance those drugs as fast as we can in patients,” emphasizing the significant impact and rapid development potential of these strategic alliances for patient benefit.
KHIDI’s collaboration with AstraZeneca through Project NOVA creates an unparalleled platform. This initiative empowers Korean biotechnology companies to showcase their groundbreaking technologies and valuable assets directly to AstraZeneca experts, receiving invaluable evaluation and strategic feedback.
Thirteen pioneering companies were handpicked for these exclusive one-on-one sessions with AstraZeneca experts: AULBIO, EFIL BioScience, IMBiologics, IntoCell, J2H Biotech, MediMabBio, Novorex, Olix Pharmaceuticals, Pin Therapeutics, Qymune, Samjin Pharmaceutical, SCbio, and TriOar. These innovative Korean firms specialize across critical therapeutic areas, including immunology, oncology, nephrology, and metabolic diseases.
Jeong Young-hun, Executive Director at KHIDI, highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative. “Because open innovation, which can quickly secure innovative technology, has become a key survival strategy, Project NOVA is a bridge for our outstanding biotechnology firms to take the first step onto the global stage,” he affirmed.
He further expressed, “We hope that it can serve as a critical chance to create practical business achievements and joint growth by combining the innovativeness of Korean companies and the infrastructure of AstraZeneca, a leading global company.” This statement underscores the potential for synergistic collaboration.
Looking ahead, KHIDI is committed to facilitating ongoing communication and collaboration between the Korean biotech firms and AstraZeneca. This sustained support aims to foster tangible outcomes, including crucial joint research and development (R&D) initiatives.
This initiative aligns with the broader ‘K-Biopharma Next Bridge’ program, launched earlier this year by KHIDI and Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare. The program aims to significantly bolster global open innovation across Korea’s pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors. Beyond the strategic partnership with AstraZeneca, the Korean government is actively collaborating with other industry leaders such as AbbVie, Amgen, Novo Nordisk, MSD, and Roche to comprehensively support the robust growth of Korean biotech companies on the world stage.
