Acclaimed classical pianist Lim Yunchan has received a prestigious honor for his critically celebrated album, “J.S. Bach: Goldberg Variations.” The non-profit German Association for the Promotion of Classical Music announced on its website Monday (local time) that Lim was recognized for his outstanding recording, released in February.
Lim’s album was chosen from a highly competitive field of approximately 680 recordings and projects submitted for this year’s esteemed awards, highlighting the exceptional quality of his work. Renowned German violinist Christian Tetzlaff and distinguished horn player Sarah Willis were also named recipients in the same distinguished category.
This achievement marks a significant milestone, as it is the second consecutive year a South Korean pianist has claimed this prestigious title. Lim’s win follows the triumph of fellow South Korean virtuoso Cho Seong-jin last year, who was honored for his exquisite recording of “Ravel: The Complete Solo Piano Works.”
This latest recognition further solidifies Lim Yunchan’s rapidly growing international acclaim and extensive list of accolades. In 2024, the talented pianist made history by becoming the first Korean artist to secure a piano category award at the prestigious Gramophone Awards for his stunning debut studio album, “Chopin: Etudes.” Prior to that, Lim garnered widespread attention last year by sweeping three prizes at the esteemed BBC Music Magazine Awards, including the highly coveted Recording of the Year.
