Seoul – LG Chem Ltd. has unveiled an ambitious strategic investment plan, committing an impressive 15 trillion won (approximately USD $9.74 billion) to research and development by 2035. This significant capital allocation aims to cultivate robust new growth drivers across high-potential sectors, including advanced semiconductor materials, innovative mobility solutions, cutting-edge robotics components, and life-changing anticancer drugs.

Chief Executive Officer Kim Dong-chun announced this forward-looking strategy during a recent town hall meeting, emphasizing the company’s pivotal shift. LG Chem is actively diversifying its core business portfolio, moving beyond traditional petrochemicals to aggressively expand into high-value-added industries that promise substantial future returns and technological leadership.

“Our vision is to profoundly upgrade our entire business portfolio,” stated CEO Kim. “By strategically fostering semiconductor materials, advanced mobility solutions, robotics materials, and next-generation anticancer drugs, we are establishing these as our core future growth businesses, driving sustainable innovation and market leadership.”

A substantial portion of this monumental investment, approximately 70 percent, will be strategically allocated towards the intensive development of semiconductor, mobility, and robotics materials. LG Chem is committed to securing industry-leading technologies and pioneering new applications, particularly leveraging the power of artificial intelligence (AI) to accelerate breakthroughs in these critical and evolving areas.

Within the dynamic semiconductor segment, LG Chem’s focus will center on developing advanced packaging materials, which are crucial for the next generation of high-performance chips. Furthermore, the company will significantly expand its presence in the burgeoning mobility and robotics materials market, exploring innovative solutions such as structural materials designed for advanced robots, alongside precision drive systems and specialized bonding materials essential for future technological advancements across industries.
