The South Korean stock market experienced a slight downturn on Tuesday, opening lower as investor sentiment mirrored overnight losses on Wall Street. A notable decline in major US technology firms tempered earlier optimism surrounding the progress in peace negotiations between the United States and Iran, influencing local market trends.

Following its initial decline of 0.34 percent at market open, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) registered a decrease of 3.17 points, or 0.03 percent, settling at 9,111.38 by 9:15 a.m. This movement reflects the cautious trading day for South Korean equities.

Investor focus overnight was partly on geopolitical developments, as US Vice President JD Vance indicated that a “very good foundation” had been laid for negotiations aimed at a final agreement with Iran. Mediators involved in the discussions also reported significant progress, which initially sparked some global market optimism.

Despite the positive news on the diplomatic front, US stock markets concluded trading mixed. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index, a key indicator for technology stocks, notably fell by 1.3 percent, driven by widespread concerns impacting major technology companies.

Further impacting investor sentiment were reports concerning Elon Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX. News emerged that SpaceX is undertaking a significant bond sale, anticipated to be a substantial fundraising endeavor to bolster its burgeoning artificial intelligence initiatives.

Following a record-setting IPO last week, shares in SpaceX experienced a sharp decline of 16.4 percent, marking its third consecutive day of losses. This dip added to the cautious mood in global technology and growth stock sectors.

Back in Seoul, the ripple effect of these international market dynamics was evident as several major South Korean market heavyweights commenced trading with lower valuations.

Among the prominent companies, market bellwether SK hynix saw its shares dip by 0.45 percent. Its fierce chipmaking competitor, Samsung Electronics, also recorded a decline, falling 0.99 percent as investors reacted to broader industry trends.

The automotive sector also felt the pressure, with top carmaker Hyundai Motor retreating 3.1 percent. Additionally, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, a key electronic components manufacturing affiliate of Samsung Electronics, experienced a significant drop of 4.02 percent, reflecting broader market adjustments.
