Leading South Korean artificial intelligence firm Upstage announced Tuesday its strategic consolidation of its proprietary AI model, workplace AI tools, and a prominent web portal into a unified operational platform.
This bold move underscores Upstage’s conviction that an entirely home-grown, end-to-end AI system can robustly compete on the global stage, independent of reliance on American or Chinese foundational technologies. This vision forms a cornerstone of the company’s compelling narrative as it gears up for its anticipated initial public offering (IPO).
Upstage’s ambition aligns perfectly with a broader national strategy. It stands as one of five select firms tasked by the South Korean government last year to cultivate indigenous AI models, fostering what officials term “sovereign AI” to reduce dependence on external technologies. Demonstrating strong public-private partnership, a portion of the approximately 730 billion won ($484 million) raised by Upstage originates from a significant state-backed fund, affirming national commitment to its AI development.
Positioning itself as Korea’s pioneering AI software unicorn, Upstage is actively engaging with leading brokerages, including UBS, in preparation for its highly anticipated stock market debut. Market projections currently estimate the company’s valuation for the listing to range impressively between 2 trillion and 5 trillion won.

This pivotal reorganization serves as the foundational platform upon which Upstage’s upcoming public listing will be marketed. Operating under the new strategic banner of “Upstage Company,” the firm is meticulously integrating three key assets it has recently acquired or developed: **Solar**, its cutting-edge, proprietary large language AI model; **Timely**, an innovative startup acquired this month, providing intuitive no-code tools that empower office workers to effortlessly create their own AI assistants; and **Daum**, a well-established web portal acquired from Kakao in May, destined for a renewed strategic role.
Upstage CEO Kim Sung-hoon articulated a compelling, politically charged rationale for establishing this end-to-end AI value chain. He specifically referenced Washington’s recent actions restricting international access to highly advanced US-made AI models, emphasizing the inherent risks and strategic vulnerabilities associated with external technological reliance.
“Artificial intelligence has transcended its traditional role as merely a service or a tool; it has unequivocally become a national strategic asset,” Kim asserted. He issued a stark warning that any entity controlling the foundational core technology possesses the unilateral power to “cut off supply whenever they choose,” highlighting the critical imperative for technological self-sufficiency.
Consequently, Kim passionately urged the South Korean government to significantly amplify its financial and policy support for AI development, advocating for an increase of more than tenfold.
Upstage’s assertions regarding the intrinsic capabilities of its AI technology are undeniably ambitious, though awaiting independent verification. The company claims that a forthcoming preview of its newest Solar AI model, slated for release later this month, demonstrates performance on par with cutting-edge systems from prominent US developers like Anthropic and OpenAI. Furthermore, in specialized tests evaluating AI “agents” – autonomous tools capable of performing tasks – Solar reportedly outperforms comparable Chinese models.
It is important to note that these impressive performance metrics are derived from internal company evaluations and have not yet undergone independent, third-party confirmation.
The integration and revitalization of Daum represent a significant strategic gamble for Upstage. This legacy web portal, despite its current market share of barely 1 percent in domestic searches, is envisioned as a critical consumer-facing platform. Its primary purpose is to seamlessly integrate the Solar AI model directly with end-users and to provide a rich, continuous stream of high-quality Korean-language data for further AI refinement. Commencing in July, Upstage plans to introduce advanced features such as AI-generated answer summaries, alongside significantly enhanced and smarter shopping, dining, and travel search functionalities.
