Hyundai Engineering announced Thursday the official groundbreaking for the Hillsboro Solar Power Plant in Texas, marking its inaugural fully integrated overseas renewable energy development project. This significant initiative represents Hyundai Engineering’s comprehensive management from inception to completion.
The pivotal groundbreaking ceremony occurred Wednesday in Hill County, Texas. The event saw key executives in attendance, including representatives from Hyundai Engineering, various Hyundai Motor Group affiliates, and local EPC contractors. Notable attendees included Lee Seung-won, head of Hyundai Engineering’s energy plant business division; Peter Branham, chief operating officer of Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama; and Christopher Whitehead, chief administrative officer of Hyundai Mobis Alabama.
This project stands as a monumental achievement for Hyundai Engineering, as the company meticulously steered the entire development lifecycle. This included crucial stages such as securing necessary permits, finalizing power purchase agreements, and arranging robust project financing solutions.
Demonstrating strong financial acumen, Hyundai Engineering successfully secured $310 million in project financing. This substantial funding was provided by a consortium of four institutions, prominently featuring the Industrial Bank of Korea.
The Hillsboro Solar Power Plant, boasting a substantial 200-megawatt capacity, is slated to commence commercial operations in December 2027. Upon activation, it is projected to generate approximately 476 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, contributing significantly to regional energy needs.
In response to the escalating global demand for low-carbon energy infrastructure, Hyundai Engineering has strategically accelerated its expansion into renewable and next-generation energy ventures, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable development.
The company’s growing portfolio includes past successes such as the Saemangeum onshore solar project, completed in 2021. Furthermore, in 2024, Hyundai Engineering was selected as a strategic partner for a substantial 1-gigawatt solar power project in Serbia, showcasing its international reach.
Beyond its significant contributions to solar energy, Hyundai Engineering has diversified its expertise into cutting-edge nuclear and hydrogen projects. Notable engagements include participation in the Missouri University Research Reactor project and the establishment of an advanced water electrolysis-based hydrogen production facility in Boryeong, located in South Chungcheong Province.
An official from Hyundai Engineering stated, “This landmark project unequivocally demonstrates our profound capabilities as a leading energy developer. We possess comprehensive expertise spanning the entire project cycle, from initial development and financing to successful operations.”
The official further added, “We are committed to diligently expanding our next-generation energy projects across strategic markets in North America and Europe, thereby solidifying and strengthening our global competitive edge in the sustainable energy sector.”
