In a landmark strategic move within the biopharmaceutical sector, GC Biopharma announced Wednesday the divestiture of its U.S. affiliate, Curevo Vaccine, to pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly and Company. This significant transaction is valued at up to $1.5 billion.
The comprehensive agreement stipulates that Eli Lilly will acquire all outstanding shares of Curevo, thereby securing exclusive global rights to amezosvatein, Curevo’s promising herpes zoster vaccine candidate currently advancing through critical development phases.
GC Biopharma confirmed that the financial framework of the deal encompasses an immediate upfront payment upon the transaction’s closing, complemented by substantial milestone payments contingent upon future successful development and commercialization achievements of the vaccine candidate.
This substantial valuation underscores the exceptional clinical competitiveness of amezosvatein. Notably, the innovative herpes zoster vaccine candidate has showcased superior immunogenicity and tolerability in rigorous head-to-head clinical trials when compared against Shingrix, GSK’s established market-leading shingles vaccine.
Furthermore, GC Biopharma anticipates that this strategic transaction will solidify a diversified, long-term business model. This will be achieved through immediate proceeds from the sale, the potential for significant future milestone payments, possible revenue streams from contract manufacturing, and ongoing royalty income directly linked to future sales.
“This pivotal deal emphatically highlights the robust R&D capabilities and collaborative strategic approach that Curevo has meticulously cultivated since its inception,” stated Huh Eun-chul, CEO of GC Biopharma.
He further affirmed, “Our commitment remains steadfast in strengthening globally competitive research and development initiatives, particularly for pharmaceutical products aimed at expanding our presence in international markets.”
