Following its recent controversial “Tank Day” marketing campaign, Starbucks Korea announced on Tuesday a temporary policy change to allow full refunds for customers holding Starbucks prepaid cards, irrespective of the remaining balance.

This special refund window, active from June 1-14, marks a significant departure from the company’s usual policy, which typically requires customers to have spent over 60 percent of their total prepaid amount before being eligible for a refund.

A Starbucks official stated, “Taking hefty responsibility and with a spirit of self-reflection, we have decided to loosen these regulations to minimize any inconvenience for customers who have recently sought refunds.”

Customers can initiate their refund requests conveniently through the Starbucks mobile application. Approved transactions will be processed and completed within seven business days from the request date. The maximum refund amount is capped at ₩2 million (approximately $1,329 USD), which corresponds to the highest permissible preload value on a Starbucks card.

Data from Starbucks Korea’s audit report reveals that its prepaid funds reached an impressive ₩427.6 billion by the end of last year, marking an 8.22 percent increase from the preceding year. Furthermore, in 2025, Starbucks Korea achieved record sales of ₩3.24 trillion and reported an operating profit of ₩173 billion.
