Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced a pivotal acquisition, securing technology assets and related intellectual property rights from Turn Biotechnologies through a successful auction bid. This strategic move propels Daewoong into the forefront of developing groundbreaking therapies for aging-related diseases.
Central to this acquisition is Turn Biotechnologies’ innovative ERA platform. This advanced partial reprogramming technology utilizes mRNA-delivered reprogramming factors, meticulously designed to rejuvenate aged cells. It aims to restore them to a younger, healthier state while crucially preserving their intrinsic cellular identity.
Distinguishing itself from full reprogramming methods that can erase a cell’s original characteristics and pose safety challenges, partial reprogramming offers a safer, more targeted approach. It selectively enhances age-related functional decline, maintaining the cell’s inherent properties. This technology is rapidly gaining recognition as a highly promising next-generation solution for addressing various aging-related conditions.
This acquisition seamlessly integrates with Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s core strategy, which views aging as a controllable biological process. The company is dedicated to tackling the fundamental causes of diseases rather than merely alleviating symptoms.
Further reinforcing this collaboration, the deal builds upon an existing partnership with Turn Biotechnologies through Daewoong’s affiliate, HanAll Biopharma. HanAll had previously established a licensing agreement with Turn and, alongside Daewoong, invested in the company, fostering a robust and long-term alliance.
Daewoong highlights the escalating global interest in aging research, driven by rapidly aging populations and an increasing societal demand for healthier, longer lifespans. Anti-aging technologies are now recognized as a critical growth engine for both the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors.
The company is committed to significantly strengthening its research and development capabilities in the field of aging-related diseases. This concerted effort aims to secure an early leadership position within the burgeoning global anti-aging therapeutics market.
“Aging research has emerged as a transformative strategic field, poised to redefine the future paradigm of medicine far beyond the treatment of individual diseases,” stated Daewoong Pharmaceutical CEO Park Sung-soo.
“By securing this cutting-edge platform technology, we are poised to significantly advance our next-generation therapeutic strategies and enhance our global R&D competitiveness.”
