Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong Issues Apology Amidst Escalating Labor Dispute
Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong on Saturday offered a public apology for the internal tensions plaguing the company, acknowledging that the situation has caused significant concern among global customers and stakeholders. His statement comes at a critical time as a deepening labor dispute over performance-based compensation threatens to disrupt the technology giant’s operations.
Addressing reporters upon his return to Seoul from a business trip to Japan, Lee stated, “I sincerely apologize to our global customers for causing anxiety and damaging trust because of problems within the company.” Speaking at the Seoul Gimpo Business Aviation Center, he emphasized the need for unity within the organization, asserting that “everyone at Samsung is one team” and urging employees to “bring their wisdom together and move in the same direction.”
The core of the ongoing disagreement centers on the company’s performance-based pay structure. The Samsung union is demanding a policy change that would allocate a fixed 15 percent of Samsung’s operating profit specifically for employee bonuses, in addition to removing the existing cap on these payout amounts. This proposal aims to ensure more consistent and potentially higher compensation for its workforce.
However, Samsung management has rejected the union’s call for a fixed bonus formula. The company maintains its preference for the current compensation system, which allows for flexibility and the provision of uncapped special rewards only when deemed necessary, rather than committing to a rigid percentage of profits.
With neither side showing willingness to concede, negotiations have reached a critical deadlock. In response, the union has announced plans to initiate a significant strike from Thursday through June 7, anticipating the participation of up to 50,000 members. This potential walkout represents one of the largest industrial actions in Samsung’s history.
An industrial action of this magnitude at Samsung would be meticulously observed across the entire semiconductor industry. Even minor disruptions to Samsung’s crucial chip operations can have profound and immediate effects on global production schedules and customer commitments, given the company’s pivotal role in the worldwide chip supply chain.
Concerns from industry observers are mounting, with warnings that direct and indirect financial losses could potentially soar past 100 trillion won (approximately $66.76 billion) if the impending strike severely impacts Samsung’s vital chip manufacturing facilities. This highlights the substantial economic stakes involved in resolving the ongoing labor dispute.
