LS Cable & System announced the completion and grand opening of an advanced eco-friendly copper materials plant by its subsidiary, Korea Future Materials, in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, on Tuesday. This strategic move significantly bolsters the company’s competitive edge within the rapidly evolving global cable and battery supply chain, focusing on sustainable material solutions.
The newly inaugurated Korea Future Materials Gunsan facility has commenced production of a diverse portfolio of eco-friendly advanced materials. This includes high-demand products such as recycled copper, innovative Cuflake designed for copper foil applications, oxygen-free copper, and various specialized copper alloys, catering to future industry needs.
A cornerstone of this new production line is recycled copper, meticulously recovered from discarded cables and other waste materials. This sustainable process dramatically reduces carbon emissions by up to 80 percent when compared to conventional copper mining methods. LS Cable & System anticipates this environmentally superior material will provide a significant competitive advantage in critical cable and battery markets, particularly in Europe and other developed nations increasingly implementing stringent environmental and carbon emission standards.
Further enhancing its sustainable offerings, LS Cable developed Cuflake, recognized as the world’s first eco-friendly raw material for copper foil. This groundbreaking material revolutionizes manufacturing by replacing traditional copper wire with copper flakes, thereby streamlining the production process. The company highlights that Cuflake not only lowers overall production costs and energy consumption but also ensures enhanced supply stability and superior environmental sustainability for its partners.
Through Korea Future Materials, LS Cable is actively establishing Korea’s pioneering circular supply chain, integrating eco-friendly materials with advanced cable production. Concurrently, the company is strategically expanding its North American footprint, leveraging the capabilities of affiliates such as LS GreenLink, Gaon Cable, LS Eco Energy, and LS Eco Advanced Materials. As part of this expansion, Korea Future Materials is also planning the development of a new manufacturing facility strategically located near LS GreenLink’s operations in Virginia.
Korea Future Materials was established in 2023, emerging from the spin-off of LS Cable’s highly successful recycled copper business from its materials division. This new entity proudly carries forward over six decades of unparalleled copper processing expertise inherited directly from its esteemed parent company.
Jeon Ik-soo, CEO of Korea Future Materials, emphasized the company’s forward-looking vision, stating, “We are committed to continuously expanding our eco-friendly resource recycling business. Our focus remains on strengthening our capacity to supply high-value-added materials that are absolutely essential for driving the global electrification era.”
