SINGAPORE — The healthcare landscape is rapidly evolving, driven by transformative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. At the forefront of this revolution, Singapore General Hospital (SGH), the nation’s largest and oldest medical institution, is spearheading initiatives to integrate cutting-edge AI for enhanced patient care and optimized medical professional capabilities.
Addressing the growing challenge of cognitive impairment in aging Asian populations, SGH has innovated with **PENSIEVE-AI**. This groundbreaking, user-friendly tool leverages patient drawings on a tablet to facilitate the early detection of cognitive impairment and dementia. “In Singapore and across our neighboring countries, limited healthcare resources often lead to a significant shortage of neuropsychologists,” explains Liew Tau Ming, Senior Consultant of Psychiatry at SGH. “This AI-driven testing tool at SGH aims to streamline the diagnostic process, circumventing the lengthy and resource-intensive traditional evaluations.”
**PENSIEVE-AI** boasts an impressive 93 percent accuracy in identifying cognitive impairment and dementia, validated across nearly 1,800 seniors aged 65 and above. The rapid assessment takes less than five minutes, providing immediate feedback: a green, yellow, or red light, with red signifying an urgent need for medical consultation. This innovative solution tackles the critical issue of 80 to 90 percent of seniors with cognitive impairment remaining undiagnosed due to complex, time-consuming, and expensive traditional methods. SGH projects that this **AI-based test** could yield substantial savings, up to SG$3,650 ($2,870) per senior, while freeing up approximately 15 hours of valuable clinician time per patient, enhancing overall healthcare efficiency.
Emphasizing a holistic approach to **healthcare innovation**, Tay Hsien Ts’ung, Vascular Surgery Clinical Director at SGH, remarked, “The most crucial aspect of innovation in healthcare must be its positive impact on the patient’s journey, extending beyond mere outcomes, though those remain vital. While traditional metrics like morbidity and mortality are paramount for evaluating medical devices, technologies, and AI, we must equally prioritize the patient experience, as these elements are intricately linked.” This philosophy underpins SGH’s commitment to patient-centric technological advancements.
Further solidifying its role as a regional leader in **medical innovation**, SGH has partnered with global health technology leader Philips to inaugurate the **SGH and Philips MRI Training Center**. This strategic collaboration aims to significantly enhance **MRI education and clinical capabilities** throughout Singapore and the broader Southeast Asian region.
Launched in November, the state-of-the-art **MRI training center** features five advanced workstations equipped with an **AI-integrated workflow platform**. This cutting-edge technology automates routine tasks and streamlines image acquisition, leading to remarkable efficiency gains. Medical staff involved in the training confirm that the center’s **AI-powered imaging technology** can reduce MRI scan times per sequence by an impressive 15 to 50 percent, optimizing patient throughput and diagnostic speed.
Philips stated that the **SGH and Philips MRI Training Centre** will serve as a hub for comprehensive educational workshops, insightful webinars, and clinical talks. Its reach will extend beyond Singapore, benefiting healthcare organizations across the entire Asia Pacific region. “Through fostering robust collaboration and facilitating knowledge exchange,” Philips added, “this pivotal initiative is set to cultivate a strong foundation of **MRI expertise** for sustainable growth and improved patient outcomes in the region.”
