World's Largest Car Carrier Deployed by Hyundai Glovis
Hyundai Glovis’ new car carrying vessel, the Glovis Leader (Hyundai Glovis)

Hyundai Glovis, a leading global logistics company, announced Wednesday the launch of the world’s largest car carrier, significantly bolstering its capacity to support South Korean automakers’ exports and enhance its competitive edge in the international shipping market.

As the dedicated logistics unit of Hyundai Motor Group, Hyundai Glovis proudly introduced the vessel, named Glovis Leader. This colossal pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) spans an impressive 230 meters in length and 40 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 102,590. Remarkably, it is capable of transporting up to 10,800 vehicles in a single voyage, making it the first PCTC designed to carry more than 10,000 units globally.

Featuring 14 expansive cargo decks, offering a total loading capacity equivalent to 28 standard soccer fields, the Glovis Leader is engineered for unparalleled versatility. It can efficiently accommodate a diverse range of vehicles, from compact passenger cars to oversized models and heavy machinery.

Hyundai Glovis intends to strategically deploy this advanced vessel across its extensive global shipping routes, ensuring optimized and rotational service worldwide.

Committed to sustainable shipping, the Glovis Leader is equipped with a state-of-the-art dual-fuel engine system, capable of operating on both conventional fuel oil and environmentally friendly liquefied natural gas (LNG). This innovative propulsion system significantly contributes to reducing carbon emissions. Furthermore, the vessel incorporates an advanced onshore power supply system, enabling it to connect to shore electricity while docked. This feature is crucial for meeting stringent environmental regulations, including the European Union’s increasingly strict emissions trading scheme (EU ETS).

Looking ahead, Hyundai Glovis has outlined an ambitious strategy to expand its dedicated fleet of car carriers to 128 vessels by 2030. This expansion aims to boost its annual vehicle shipping volume from 3.4 million units to a remarkable 5 million units. Should this strategic goal be realized, the company projects it would command over 20 percent of the global seaborne vehicle transport market, solidifying its position as a dominant force in international logistics.

While continuing its robust support for primary clients like affiliates Hyundai Motor and Kia, Hyundai Glovis is actively pursuing expansion into new markets. The company plans to significantly increase shipments for non-affiliated customers by securing new contracts with major automakers across key regions, including Europe, North America, and China.

This strategic diversification is already yielding results, with non-affiliated business contributing a substantial 53 percent to the company’s total vehicle shipping revenue last year.
