HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has made history by becoming the inaugural Korean shipyard to secure an international order for a dedicated icebreaking vessel. This significant achievement marks a pivotal expansion for the company into the high-value market of specialized naval and commercial ships globally.

The South Korean shipbuilding powerhouse officially announced on Monday that a definitive signing ceremony was successfully conducted last Friday in Stockholm, Sweden. This landmark agreement with the Swedish Maritime Administration pertains to the advanced construction and subsequent delivery of the state-of-the-art vessel.

The prestigious event, hosted at the National Maritime Museum, saw the attendance of key figures including Joo Won-ho, head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ naval and special ship business unit, and Erik Eklund, director general of the Swedish Maritime Administration. Discussions during the ceremony also focused on fostering future cooperation between the two esteemed organizations.

Secured on Wednesday, this substantial contract is valued at an impressive $348.9 million. The advanced icebreaker will incorporate cutting-edge Polar Class 4 capabilities, designed to operate effectively in challenging icy conditions, and is scheduled for delivery in 2029. This project reinforces HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ expertise in complex shipbuilding solutions.
