May is set to be a fiercely competitive and exciting month for K-pop, with prominent girl groups from the industry’s four biggest agencies — JYP Entertainment, SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment, and Hybe — all making highly anticipated comebacks with fresh music releases.
Fans worldwide are buzzing as top K-pop acts including Babymonster, Nmixx, Itzy, Le Sserafim, Aespa, and even the reunited I.O.I are slated to unveil new music in rapid succession. Each group promises distinct concepts, innovative strategies, and a showcase of their evolving artistry, capturing global attention.
Kicking off this star-studded comeback season, YG Entertainment’s Babymonster will drop their third EP, “Choom,” on May 4. This marks their first release since the acclaimed EP “We Go Up” in October. The four-track album, spearheaded by a high-energy title track, has already generated significant buzz. YG founder and executive producer Yang Hyun-suk previously hinted that “Choom” would be “a new album unlike anything (Babymonster) has done before,” setting high expectations.
YG Entertainment confirms that Babymonster’s new album is designed to highlight the group’s broad musical spectrum and capabilities across diverse genres, notably hip hop and R&B. The title track, in particular, is expected to feature dynamic beats and intense, captivating choreography.

Following Babymonster, JYP Entertainment’s Nmixx is scheduled to release their fifth EP, “Heavy Serenade,” on May 11. This comeback comes approximately seven months after the successful launch of their first LP, “Blue Valentine.”
JYP Entertainment has revealed that the new Nmixx release will feature songwriting contributions from renowned singer-songwriter Hanroro on the title track. Furthermore, group members Lily and Bae actively participated in writing B-side tracks such as “Crescendo,” “Loud,” and “Different Girl,” signaling the group’s growing involvement in their musical production.

From the same agency, Itzy is preparing for their return on May 18 with the EP “Motto,” marking their first release in half a year.
Anticipation among fans has surged with the announcement that the eight-track album will notably include solo songs from each individual member. This release also follows a recent resurgence in popularity for the group’s 2020 B-side track “That’s a No No,” which went viral after being performed during their “Tunnel Vision” world tour stop in Sydney. With this renewed attention on Itzy, excitement for their upcoming album is exceptionally high.

On May 22, Hybe’s Le Sserafim, under Source Music, will unveil their second LP, “Pureflow pt. 1.” This release is particularly significant as it marks their first studio album in approximately three years. Prior to the full album, the group is set to release “Celebration” on Friday, a special track described as a tribute to their journey of growth alongside their dedicated fanbase.
According to Source Music, the album “Pureflow pt. 1” continues Le Sserafim’s evolving narrative. It shifts from their debut message of fearless confidence to a more introspective approach that embraces fear as an integral part of personal development. This profound theme is encapsulated in the album’s tagline, “For we are not fearless, and therefore powerful,” and is further reflected in its title “Pureflow,” an anagram of “powerful,” hinting at a nuanced exploration of inner strength and resilience.

Closing out the jam-packed month, SM Entertainment’s Aespa is scheduled to drop their second LP, “Lemonade,” on May 29. This comes nearly two years after their groundbreaking full-length album, “Armageddon.” Aespa, known for their distinctive “metallic” sound and expansive, futuristic universe, will further develop both their unique sonic identity and compelling storytelling through this new album, as stated by SM Entertainment.
Following the highly anticipated album release, the popular girl group is also preparing to embark on a large-scale global tour in August, with plans to visit 25 cities worldwide, much to the excitement of their international fanbase.
Adding an unexpected layer of excitement to the already crowded girl group calendar, the beloved project girl group I.O.I will make a long-awaited return on May 19 with their third EP, “I.O.I: Loop.” This marks their first official release in approximately nine years. Formed through the iconic idol survival program “Produce 101” in 2016, the group’s reunion has garnered immense attention, especially as it coincides with their 10th anniversary. This momentous comeback will be followed by a special three-day concert event in Seoul, celebrating their enduring legacy.
