Veteran Soprano Sumi Jo Joins SM Classics as First Recording Artist; EXO’s Suho to Feature on Her Upcoming 40th Anniversary Album ‘Continuum’
World-renowned South Korean soprano Sumi Jo has signed an exclusive recording contract with SM Entertainment, the global entertainment company announced Tuesday.
This landmark agreement establishes Jo as the first exclusive recording artist under SM’s dedicated classical and jazz label, SM Classics. The partnership is set to bolster her extensive global musical endeavors, commencing with the highly anticipated release of her 40th anniversary album, “Continuum,” scheduled for May.
“This album truly represents both the culmination of a long, dedicated journey and the exciting beginning of a new chapter,” Jo stated in a press release. “My music doesn’t reside in a single moment but continually evolves, seeking new artistic possibilities.”
She further elaborated that the album will showcase a diverse repertoire, ranging from technically challenging coloratura arias never before recorded to innovative contemporary works by modern composers, embodying her consistent pursuit of artistic challenges beyond traditional classical boundaries.
“Continuum” is an ambitious project featuring 11 tracks that encapsulate Sumi Jo’s past achievements, present artistic explorations, and future aspirations. The album boasts collaborations with prominent composers including Yiruma, Chong Park, and Takatsugu Muramatsu, with the esteemed Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra providing accompaniment under the baton of conductor Choi Young-sun.
Adding a contemporary flair, the album also incorporates captivating crossover elements. This includes a much-anticipated duet with Suho of K-pop sensation EXO and a special feature by celebrated violinist Danny Koo, effectively blending classical music’s rich tradition with broader popular appeal.
SM Classics confirmed that this contract aligns with a global major-label model, emphasizing comprehensive recording production, distribution, and promotion. Under this significant agreement, Sumi Jo will receive full support for all her album and digital music releases.
Concurrently, Sumi Jo is celebrating her 40th debut anniversary with a series of prestigious global performances. Following highly successful concerts at London’s Cadogan Hall and New York’s Carnegie Hall in March, she is preparing for a nationwide tour across Korea in May, connecting with fans at home.
Furthermore, Jo will host the second edition of the Sumi Jo International Singing Competition in July in France, underscoring her ongoing commitment to mentoring and nurturing the next generation of classical music artists.
